Journal entry 4

For my standard, I decided to choose the LAFS.910.WHST.3.8 standard that was present in the grades 9-10 section. This standard seems to be largely based on how to construct papers based on research, and is a great means of teaching students how to use things such as bibliography generators, and plagiarism checkers alongside other means of working on papers. I think that I have the tools to teach this, due to the fact that I have used all of the examples of programs that the page suggested for this, but I should probably refresh myself on different citation styles. The only fear I would have is not being quite well versed enough in order to prevent misunderstood citation generation, where I would be unable to tell if it was correctly cited or potential for plagiarism disqualifications.

The tool that I decided to use for this section was a video entitled "Thinking Like a Historian", which basically was a rundown on how to A) get students involved with learning about history, and B) how to think about history in a better light. I found this tool very fascinating, because of the fact that it cites how some people choose to teach entirely based on the formula "this happened, then this thing happened, then some other stuff happened because of it", and how not thinking about the history contextually can really cause confusion, and keep it boring at the same time. I think this is not only a tool that I personally would use, but I would encourage all students to be sure to follow the rule as well. Although it is a little bit vague of a tool, I think that this is one of the more solid teaching advice items for history that I have seen so far.

I think that internet searching is a critical tool for teachers, due to the fact that if you need to look something up you do not want to be sitting there for a long time because this could mess up the flow of class. Alongside this, knowing good strategies for how to web search effectively will be an excellent tool that you can use to show your students, preventing bad sources from coming into the mix and things like that. I think that teaching students how to use databases for academic articles will be a large aid that took me forever to figure out, so the sooner that they can learn how to do this will be a great means of increasing their research proficiency. But interestingly enough, I never knew that putting asterisks into a search when you are missing words would be a better way to do it, that would have saved me a ton of time before trying to find songs and quotes I could not entirely remember.

  1. Hey Brad! I think you chose a great standard, thinking back to it not a lot of my teachers in high school really prepared us to create research papers, which is essential in college. I also question myself when citing and often think I did it wrong since I've noticed each professor wants it to be a certain way, especially with in text citations.
